Origin & Story
This coffee comes from Finca Nogales, tucked into the mountains of Huila in southern Colombia near the edge of the Amazon rainforest, at around 1,750 metres above sea level. The farm is run by Oscar Hernández, a third-generation coffee farmer whose grandfather Ricardo bought Los Nogales back in 1953. Oscar's father Ricaurte went on to win Colombia's first-ever Cup of Excellence in 2005, building a reputation that Oscar has carried forward since taking over the farm.
Oscar grows Typica here, one of the oldest and most storied arabica varieties, first carried out of Ethiopia via Yemen centuries ago and still prized for the clarity and delicacy it gives the cup, even though it yields far less than modern hybrids.
What sets Finca Nogales apart is its focus on precise, controlled fermentation, work led with Oscar's sister Angie and her microbiologist husband Jhohan, who manage yeast strains and fermentation conditions the way a winemaker would. We're excited to be working with a producer pushing washed processing this far.
Handled by Oscar and his team, this lot stands out for its careful advanced washed processing:
Ripe cherries handpicked at peak maturity on Finca Nogales' steep slopes
Pulped and fermented under closely controlled yeast and temperature conditions
Washed clean before drying slowly to lock in clarity
Dried on raised beds and sorted for consistency before export
These meticulous steps give Banana Twist its bright, tropical fruit character and clean, juicy sweetness.
