Origin & Story
This coffee comes from the Rwenzori Mountains in western Uganda, an area long nicknamed the Mountains of the Moon, where volcanic soil and altitudes between 1,300 and 1,600 metres above sea level create excellent growing conditions for arabica. The cherries are cultivated by around 200 smallholder farmers, most tending plots of just one or two acres, growing SL14 and SL28 trees.
Both varieties trace back to Scott Agricultural Laboratories in Kenya in the 1930s. SL28 was selected in 1935 from a single tree within the drought resistant Bourbon lineage, while SL14 was selected a year later from the same breeding programme and belongs to the Typica line. Neither yields much and both need real care to grow well, but at altitude they reward that effort with a clean, layered cup, which is part of why they became signature varieties across East Africa.
Agri Evolve works directly with these farmers, paying premiums for quality cherries and offering training to raise standards across the region. The cherries are then brought to Agri Evolve's Nyabirongo facility, built in 2022, where they are floated to remove underripe or damaged fruit before drying begins.
While we have not yet visited Uganda ourselves, we are glad to be working with a partner like Agri Evolve, whose investment in Rwenzori has helped turn it into one of East Africa's most exciting specialty origins, with lots regularly scoring above 85 points.
Handled by Agri Evolve, this lot stands out for its careful natural processing:
- Ripe cherries handpicked across the Rwenzori foothills
- Floated at Nyabirongo to sort out underripe or damaged cherries
- Dried slowly on raised beds for several weeks, turned regularly for an even dry
- Sorted and graded by size and density before export
